2024 Interior Design Predictions: Which Trends Will Last and Appeal To Buyers

As a Greenwich Connecticut real estate agent, I’ve seen interior design change time and time again. For better or worse, sometimes interior design trends are just that — trends. Instead of sticking around for years to come, they rise to popularity, and then quickly are on the way out. When I say “trend,” you might think bouclé or subway tiles. But the real trend that’s on the way out? The constant renovations in an attempt to keep up with the trend cycle.

Why obsess over whether or not your home is on trend when you could honor your own style? Plus, you’ll be creating a space that supports, rather than harms, the planet.

Below, you’ll find some of my favorite interior design and home decor trends that are, yes, on trend, but will last for years to come and allow you to curate a living space that feels like you. As you read, you just might notice a theme tying together my recs — stick around until the end to figure out what it is!

Wood

I always feel inspired by the gorgeous trees throughout Greenwich (did you know White Oak tree is Connecticut's state tree?). So why not bring that feeling indoors?

How to use wood in interior design

Wood is just so versatile, especially in the spaces where we spend the most time. Take wood in the kitchen. I’m loving wooden islands, wood paneling, and other rustic touches. These are details that’ll keep up well (as long as you take care of them, of course!) and will look chic for years and years to come.

This is doubly true if you skip wood veneer and go for solid wood. A dark wood will create a feeling of comfort, whereas something lighter can look really sophisticated. Pair with metallic hardware for a little oomph.

It’s true even in bathrooms, where wood has officially surpassed white when it comes to bathroom vanities. You might be surprised by just how elegant a wood vanity can look when it's the right grain and finish.

For an eye-catching example of wood details, check out this stunner of a kitchen in my 98 Pear Tree Point Road listing.

Stone

Unsure about the stone trend? Let its lifespan prove that it’s worth integrating into your space. Stone has always been a popular material, especially for exteriors, with limestone as the most popular. Natural stone is timeless, and, personally, I’m a big fan for that exact reason.

How to use stone in your home

  • Limestone — is perfect when you’re trying to achieve a minimalist look. Its versatility allows you to use it almost anywhere in the home.

  • Marble — if you love a luxe finish, marble is for you. It’s always eye-catching when someone embraces this stone in full and goes for a marble floor. Just be prepared to take extra good care of it!

  • Granite — A go-to for kitchen countertops and islands is granite because it’s both heat resistant and really holds up to constant use. It also comes in some seriously beautiful shades, ranging from cream to even dark green.

  • Brick — I just love the look of brick in a garden. It’s a classic look for any outdoor space, and it doesn’t show wear and tear.

  • Terrazzo — now, this one has blown up in popularity over the last few years. I’ve seen it used for everything from countertops to side tables. I like this as a fun pop of color for a bathroom countertop since it’s waterproof.

Why you should use stone in your home

With a seemingly endless amount of options to choose from, you can find the stone that works for your home’s aesthetic, whether you’re a minimalist or want something bold.

98 Pear Tree Point Road has some timeless stone accents for inspiration!

Warm shades

One trend on its way out is millennial gray – instead, vanilla, off-white, browns, and other natural colors (sensing a theme here?) are on the up and up. Overall, paint is leaning warmer in 2024 and for many years to come as we welcome color and say goodbye to hyper-minimalism.

Goodbye, boring shades

That doesn’t mean no more white and gray, just a bit more variety as we bring nature and life to our spaces again. Speaking of nature, green lovers, rejoice: shades of green aren’t going anywhere, with darker greens and olives likely to blow up in 2024. So you don’t have to give up your beloved green kitchen just yet!

My favorite warm paint colors

A few of my favorite paint colors heading into 2024 (and beyond!) are Farrow and Ball's India Yellow and Benjamin Moore's Buttercup.

For something fun, go for Benjamin Moore Raspberry Blush Behr's (their color of the year!) or Dunn Edwards Terra Rosa, which has a nice, comforting hue without being anything close to bland.

Biophilic design

When you choose to skip the trends and lean into timeless interior design, more natural materials – think about the stone and wood I mentioned before – are a perfect fit. Enter: Biophilic design. It can be as simple as bringing plants into your home, or as thoughtful as bringing in natural shapes like arches, but this design approach is basically about incorporating nature into your living space.

Embrace all of the natural beauty that surrounds Greenwich. Pay attention to the elements around your home. If you're located by the water, try leaning into blues and whites and softer lines. If there's a lot of greenery or trees around your home looking to that for inspiration in what you bring into your home. If you need inspiration, go check out the nature and parks all around us; I always enjoy wandering the Audubon Center, Babcock Preserve, and Tod’s Point.

Once you’re inspired, it’s time to bring the greenery indoors.

The best plant shops near Greenwich

Once you’ve got your greenery set, remember that great lighting plays a huge part – nothing says nature quite like fresh sunshine. Plus, this design can even reduce stress. You can’t go wrong!

Overall, natural elements are key, from wood and stone to gorgeous sunlight and inviting shapes.
